Mayor's Cup to Promote Golf
Myrtle Beach is a wonderful
place to get away for your winter vacation. Due to its good
weather and amazing golf courses, it is a popular destination for
anyone looking for a great vacation. This winter, in an effort to
promote Myrtle Beach golf as a year-round activity, the city is
starting an annual Mayor's Cup tournament at the city-owned Whispering
Pines Golf Course. The Golf course is located at 31st Avenue South
and Kings Highway.
Whispering Pines Golf Course is a true golfing
pleasure. The golf course has over six thousand yards of grass
for your golfing enjoyment. Whispering Pines offers an amazing combination
of challenge and beauty, carved out of two hundred acres of towering
pines and mature hardwoods by designers Finger, Dye, and Spahn.
The course allows you to relax with its majestic scenery, while
simultaneously engrossing you in its challenging course.
Tree lined fairways, carefully placed lakes, and undulating greens
are a wonderful backdrop for the Mayor’s Cup Tournament at Myrtle
Beach. With above average slope and handicap ratings, this traditional,
classic design style course does not need gimmicks for a satisfying
round of golf.
The course is also extremely convenient, due to its location, which
is just a half a mile away from the outstanding oceanfront hotels
and attractions
of Myrtle Beach.
In 1998, Whispering Pines was designated a “Certified Audubon Cooperative
Sanctuary by the Audubon International, becoming only the third
course in South Carolina to achieve this honor. They are still the
only course in the Myrtle Beach area to earn this honor. Alan Chasteen,
head golf professional at Whispering Pines, confirmed the plans
for the Mayor’s Cup tournament, saying the inaugural event will
be held in November and will be open to all golfers regardless of
residency. The tournament will be fifty-four holes of straight stroke
play, with the fields broken into flights after thirty-six holes.
The tournament winners will receive a gift certificate and a replica
of the Mayor's Cup. The actual Mayor's Cup will be a perpetual trophy,
with each year's winners inscribed on it. These trophies will stay
at Whispering Pines.
Mayor John Rhodes is scheduled to hold a press conference at Whispering
Pines to announce the tournament, which will be Nov. 10-12 for men
players and Nov. 17-19 for women. This tournament allows people
discover that Myrtle Beach is a good place to play golf in November.
The weather is terrific and the golf course is in great shape. It
is a perfect time for people to get away and enjoy the excitement
and relaxation of Myrtle Beach.
