Myrtle BeachMyrtle Beach is a great place to visit on vacation. You could spend your whole vacation lying on the beach, playing golf, visiting all of the local shopping malls, or doing all three! Many people wonder how Myrtle Beach received it’s somewhat odd sounding name. Myrtle Beach was not always the thriving vacation destination that it is today. You might be surprised to know that the golf paradise was once just a length of beaches with no houses, businesses or attractions whatsoever. In fact, Myrtle Beach wasn’t even called Myrtle Beach at first. In the early 1900’s, Myrtle Beach had no name at all. It was simply called New Town by the Sea. However, more and more people began to move to “New Town to take advantage of its beautiful beaches as a vacation spot. Beachfront property sold for $25 per lot, (a large amount of money back then). By 1907, the town had gained so much popularity that the town founders decided it needed a proper name. They held a contest to name the town. The winner thought of Myrtle Beach because of the many wax myrtle bushes that were popular to the area. The wax Myrtle plant is a large evergreen bush or small tree which is indigenous to the southeastern United States. Wax Myrtle bushes produce grayish white fruit coated with a wax that is used for making candles. Wax Myrtles can be seen up and down the Myrtle Beach coast. They can be seen on most Myrtle Beach golf courses as well.
